The Science: Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the clinical term for the light-tissue interaction that occurs during red light and near-infrared therapy. I rely on peer-reviewed research to explain, in plain terms, how this process supports cellular energy and function — without overstating what the science can promise.

Photon Absorption

Red and near-infrared photons penetrate skin and soft tissue, where they are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme within the mitochondria. This absorption is the foundational event of photobiomodulation.

Mitochondrial Function

Once absorbed, light energy supports the mitochondria's ability to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule cells rely on for energy. I explain this to clients as giving the body's own power plants a more efficient fuel source.

Wavelength & Dosing Specifics

Not all red light devices are built the same. Wavelength, irradiance, and session duration determine whether a device is capable of delivering a clinically meaningful dose. We outline the fundamentals below so you can evaluate any device with confidence.

Red Light

630–660 nm

Visible red wavelengths are primarily absorbed at the skin's surface and are most associated with skin quality and superficial tissue support.

Near-Infrared (NIR)

810–850 nm

NIR wavelengths are invisible to the eye and penetrate more deeply, reaching muscle and joint tissue — the range most relevant to recovery.

Typical Session

10–20 minutes

Most home protocols call for daily or near-daily sessions at a distance of 6–18 inches from the panel, depending on device output.

Dosing (Irradiance)

20–100 mW/cm²

Dosing is measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²) and depends on device power, distance, and exposure time — we help clients calibrate this to their goals.
